Limb Salvage surgery is the most advanced surgical treatment option especially for patients with bone tumour or bone cancer. Earlier amputation or the removal of the affected limb used to be the only solution of such cases. With the advent of Limb Salvage or Limb Saving surgery patients with bone cancer can live an almost normal life post surgery. Dr J S Virk is the pioneer in limb salvage surgery in Punjab. Patients from across India and globe come to Punjab for the treatment and surgery for bone cancer under Dr J S Virk.
Bone cancer is rare but needs extensive surgery by a trained and confident bone cancer surgeon for maximum benefit and minimum deficit to the bone. Since surgery has always been the best and most effective line of treatment for bone cancers hence the limb salvage surgery has come as a boon for the bone cancer patients in India. Most people with arm or leg tumors can have limb-sparing surgery, but this depends on where the tumor is, how big it is, and if it has grown into nearby structures.
Following are the symptoms of bone cancer which are most commonly seen in the patients:
Swelling in the affected bone
Pain in the joint which gets worse in the night
Difficulty in walking or using the affected limb
Tenderness in the joint affected by the tumour
Unexplained weight loss
The problem with bone cancer tumours is that if they are not diagnosed in time then they lead to pathological fracture. A pathological fracture is the break in the bone that is caused not due to an injury but due to another disease.
Diagnosis of the bone cancer is done through X-ray or CT Scan or MRI. Once the diagnosis is confirmed as cancer then the bone cancer surgeon may advise a PET CT Scan to know if it is a primary bone tumour or a secondary bone tumour. Most of the limb salvage or limb saving surgery is effective in primary tumours. When the bone tumour has developed because of cancer in any other body part then it is called secondary bone tumour or metastatic bone tumour. This happens when the cancer is in very advanced stage, mostly stage 4 where surgery has no role to play. Even if the surgery is done in advanced cancer it is more to relieve the patient of the pain and improve the quality of life.
The goal of limb-salvage surgery is to remove all of the cancer and still leave a working leg or arm. This type of surgery is very complex and needs to be done by surgeons with special skills and experience. The challenge for the surgeon is to remove the entire tumor while still saving the nearby tendons, nerves, and blood vessels to keep as much of the limb’s function and appearance as possible. The section of bone that is removed along with the tumor is replaced with a bone graft (a piece of bone from another part of the body or from another person) or with an endoprosthesis (internal prosthesis), which is a device made of metal and other materials that replaces part or all of a bone. Some newer devices combine a graft and a prosthesis.
In case of limb saving surgery more than diagnosis choice of right case is very important. This is where the experience and skills of the surgeon comes into play. The high success rate and best results in limb saving surgery for Dr Virk is due to the right selection of the case as well as his competence as a surgeon. Dr J S Virk has performed limb saving surgery for some of the most complicated bone cancer cases and patients are leading an almost normal life.
Dr. JS Virk is one of the few Orthopaedic Onco Surgeons in India. After specializing in Orthopaedics, Dr Virk has done fellowships in Onco Surgery from Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, New Delhi and in Reconstructive Surgery from Singapore General Hospital.
Dr. Virk has specialized in Limb Salvage Surgery for Bone Cancer Patients. Dr. JS Virk is currently working as Bone Cancer Surgeon at Paras Cancer Institute, Panchkula, Punjab. Dr Virk is a member of the Cancer Team which includes Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Nuclear Medicine Physicians and Surgical Oncologists. Paras Cancer Institute has the most advanced facilities in the form of Linear Accelerator, Fully equipped Modular Operation Theatres, Cryotherapy and Chemotherapy.
Bone Cancer is a rare form of cancer but so are the bone cancer specialists. Very few orthopaedic surgeons choose to go in the field of Ortho Onco Surgery. Dr. JS Virk is of the few Ortho Onco Surgeons in India.
Lots of patients who are suspected to have any form of cancer are kept hanging in suspense due to the delays in testing and receiving the reports of the tests. This causes inexcusable delay in the commencement of the treatment.
